Figures: Moby Dick

The second major figure run for the BioHazard series was handled by the company Moby Dick.

The company began in the 1980's in Japan and during the late 90's partnered with Capcom to produce merchandise for the series, starting with post-card books, playing cards, and culminating in the most well-known release they did for the series: the Real Shock Action Figures.

The Real Shock Action Figure series began in 1999 with a VHS+figure set for Biohazard 2 before moving into Biohazard 3 for marketing. It initially had a line-up planned for multiple 2-pack releases pairing each character with a B.O.W., but soon moved to single blister releases for their second wave. The figures, totalling 20 all up for the standard issues of Series 1-16, or 30 if counting the limited releases and bonus Nemesis Type-3 in the Japanese run of these, are modelled to hold certain poses, with limited motion in parts such as arms or legs, or interchangeable components such as hands for larger creatures like Nemesis, and extra parts like weaponry and stands for the figures that require them. The largest draw to the series however would be the special Nemesis Type-3 part which came in every pack released, with all figures needed to get the parts to make the final figure. As a result, the figures over the years now are significantly more difficult to find both for general scarecy being 20 years old now, but especially if they come complete with the Nemesis part, with even loose figures fetching triple digits in some cases due to rarity, particularly if they're later series releases.

There was also a limited run in the US by Toytec who redistributed the 2-piece figure boxes, but also included 2 more that were only sold in single blisters for the Japanese release in the form of Series 5 (unknown; they're a cataloguing nightmare) and Series 6 Chris Redfield vs Tyrant [Biohazard 2 Ver.]. So it was possible to get some in the West, but the line finished after Series 6 as far as I've been able to tell from reasearching the series, which meant it was impossible to both complete the main figures but also the Nemesis Type-3 with just the American releases alone. We also have photos of sealed Series 6 boxes with the Chris vs Tyrant text on them both both Redfield siblings being present in the box minus the T-103, so make of that what you will regarding dodgy distribution down the line.

My only main complaint with the series is that the figures, while a nice quality, do have issues with some sculpts mostly with the way parts are pinned, with some joints on more malleable figures like the Drain Deimos or Licker for example being prone to snapping under even the mildest of stress when posing due to them being plastic pegs. This is easily fixable with metal pins and polyester putty since they're made of PVC if you are a customiser and need to repair one for motion, or epoxy sculpt if hard-setting a piece + paint. These failing joints are what make loose figure purchases today for these releases a major gamble: your mileage may vary, be very aware of this if trying to collect them.

Title: Real Shock Action Figure G Type 2 Dark Version 1999 (リアルアクションフィギュアG第2段階「ダークバージョン1999」)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 1999
Retail: 4,980円
Scans: Box Front | Box Back

Information:
The second Real Shock figure released before they began the main line for Biohazard 3 onward. This is a special re-colour variant of the G Type 2 they made as a Figure Video Set that the official catalogue from Moby Dick calls the 'Dark Version 1999', though I've also seen it called the 'Monochrome' by people in the community. This figure is really well sculpted and is hefty coming in at 24cm, arguably the better Birkin sculpt out there given its main competition at the time was the ToyBiz figure, with Palisades only doing their sculpture a few years later.

G Type 2 was sculpted by Minamizaka Tatsunori (南坂達徳).

Title: No.01 Jill Valentine (BIOHAZARD 3 Ver.) & DRAIN DEIMOS Mystery Colour Version (No.01ジル・バレンタインBIOHAZARD 3 Ver.&ドレインディモス「ミステリーカラーバーション」)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 12/1999
Retail: 5,980円
Nemesis Piece: Head (MCV)
Scans: Box Front | Box Back

Information:
The 'Mystery Colour Version' is the official catalogue title by Moby Dick for their alternate colour releases. In the Japanaese release there were 8 MCV variants in bronze and silver, with the box sets of No.01 and No.02 getting bronze releases, and No.3 and No.4 getting silver releases. Currently, these are the only known official and released-to-public alternates in the series from the Japanese side of things. From what I've been able to research from Moby Dick's own website on archives as far back as 2001 along with crawling through old blog and 2ch posts these were commercially sold (even on Moby Dick's official online store in 2002 through to at least 2004) and weren't special lottery or prize issues, simply a limited release, which is why I've chosen to catalogue them with a retail price.

Just like the standard release, the MCV version of Jill comes in at 20cm and is sculpted in a 'rifle firing pose', with accessories of a stand base and Winchester, complete with pump-action. Jill has a moveable neck, shoulders, and waist twist. The Drain Deimos comes in at 21cm and has a moveable neck, shoulders, elbows, claws, hips, ankle rotation, poseable mandibles, and even has sensilla which I find sweet Moby Dick officially note as being "flocked" onto the figure, but they're really plugs. These plugs are the most likely thing you'll find missing or shedding beyond damaged joints these days due to age.

Jill was sculpted by Kou Orita (折田航), with the Drain Deimos being sculpted by Pierre Suda (ピエール須田).

The original maquette for the Drain Deimos was up for sale by Moby Dick online in 2004 for 12,000円 and was still listed on their store until its closure at the end of 2006. It's unknown if the maquette sold or has now been lost.

Jill has a moveable neck, shoulders, and waist twist. The Drain Deimos comes in at 22cm and has 4 moveable arm joints (shoulders, elbows,) and a waist twist.

Title: No.05 Claire Redfield (Leather Jacket Ver.) (No.05クレア・レッドフォード革ジャン Ver.)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 2000
Retail: 2,780円
Nemesis Piece: Tentacle 2
Scans: Backing Card Front | Backing Card Back

Information:
Claire marks the start of the line shifting from the double pack to the single blisters in the Japanese releases. I've always loved this figure because it was so interesting to see one of the special costumes being made into figure at the time, a trend that didn't really continue outside of this series — NECA certainly did the alt costume Leon, but that was just his RPD costume in 4, so it's not as distinct as these I feel. Palisades did damaged Leon and jacket-less Claire too, but not full on alternate costumes. This figure uses Claire's alt costume from Biohazard 2 which is an emblazoned leather jacket ensemble featuring the Redfield's other family emblem/motto of 'Let Me Live' with the flaming valkyrie.

Claire comes in at 21cm and is scultped in a 'unique Western-style single action pose', with accessories of a stand base, a Colt S.A.A. which can be stored in her hip holster, and a Calico M110. She has a moveable neck, shoulders, elbows, twist waist, and ankle rotation.

Claire was sculpted by Kou Orita (折田航).

Title: No.07 Chris Redfield (CODE:Veronica Ver.) (No.07クリス・レッドフォードCODE:Veronica Ver.)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 2000
Retail: 2,780円
Nemesis Piece: Back Right Leg
Scans: Backing Card Front | Backing Card Back

Information:
For a nice surprise we get a CODE: Veronica figure in the lineup as we dive further into the Moby Dick releases. We know from prototyping back in the day that CV Wesker and even the Cerberus was planned for future releases, so it makes sense we got the CV Chris, even if we didn't get the CV Claire to match. He's certainly a lot better looking than his ToyBiz iteration, likely owing to the sculptor being able to work against the CG model for a likeness versus the character art of the first game, which gives him really nice consistency with the other figures whom've been sculpted similarly from CG resources.

Chris comes in at 22cm and is sculpted in a 'rocket launcher firing pose', with accessories of a special S.T.A.R.S. stand base, a GLOCK 17 which can be stored in his leg holster, and a Rocket Launcher. He has a moveable neck, shoulders, elbows, twist waist, and ankle rotation.

Chris was sculpted by Kou Orita (折田航).

Title: No.12 IVY (No.12毒イビー)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 2001
Retail: 3,200円
Nemesis Piece: Rib
Scans: Backing Card Front | Backing Card Back

Information:
I've always really liked when weirder B.O.W. are made into figures. The Ivy aren't the most remarkable of enemies, but it managed to land itself a figure in the ToyBiz series of the standard Ivy, with the Poison variant being made in the Moby Dick series here — distinct for its bright red colouration as if in bloom. While its English nomenclature on the box simply calls it an Ivy, the Japanese catalogue from Moby Dick's official site back in 2000 does call it a Poison Ivy.

Ivy comes in at 22cm and has arms sculpted with bendable armature. It has a moveable set of stamen, shoulders, and ankle rotation.

Ivy was sculpted by Takeshi Tokiwa (ときわたけし).

Title: No.13 Leon S. Kennedy (Leather Jacket Ver.) (No.13レオン・S・ケネディ革ジャン Ver.)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 2001
Retail: 2,780円
Nemesis Piece: Upper Torso
Scans: Backing Card Front | Backing Card Back

Information:
One of the rarer figures of the series, both for the Nemesis piece that it contains but also the popularity of it. This figure uses Leon's alt costume from Biohazard 2 which is an skull-adorned leather jacket casual get-up, or as I like to think of it the Hideki Kamiya costume.

Leon comes in at 22cm, with accessories of a special S.T.A.R.S. stand base, a Desert Eagle 50AE, and a fun little prop: one of the Umbrella branded cans that are seen in the opening movie for Biohazard 2. He has a moveable neck, shoulders, elbows, twist waist, and ankle rotation.

Leon's face was sculpted by Kou Orita (折田航), with his body sculpted by Pierre Suda (ピエール須田).

Title: No.14 LICKER (No.14リッカー改)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 2001
Retail: 3,200円
Nemesis Piece: Rib
Scans: Backing Card Front | Backing Card Back

Information:
Always liked this one, but I also have always loved the design of the Licker and how well it lends to things like figures and sculptures. Much like the Ivy, the Licker has a different catalogue in the Japanese side of things where it's noted to be a 'Licker Kai' — more well known colloquially from the games as a Super Licker. Given the more brown colouration this makes sense, even with the Moby Dick site noting that 'only those whose claws have become more attrocious become Kai'.

Licker comes in at 20cm, with accessories of 4 suction cups that can be set into its hands and feet to 'recreate the ceiling scene from the BIOHAZARD 2 police station hallway'. It has a moveable neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, and ankle rotation, along with an opening and closing jaw and poseable tongue.

Licker was sculpted by Takeshi Tokiwa (ときわたけし).

Title: No.16 TYRANT (BIOHAZARD Ver.) (No.16タイラントBIOHAZARD Ver.)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 2001
Retail: 3,200円
Nemesis Piece: Rib
Scans: Backing Card Front | Backing Card Back

Information:
The final main release for Moby Dick and they crowned it by giving us the big OG itself: the Tyrant. This is a massive upgrade compared to the ToyBiz figure and only got surpassed by the NECA release a few years later, albeit based on the remake model by that time.

Tyrant comes in at 24cm, and has a ball joint in the left arm to allow for swiping poses with its claws, and uses softed ABS plastic for the heart to give it a different texture. It has a movable neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, and ankle rotation.

Tyrant was sculpted by Pierre Suda (ピエール須田).

Title: Bonus Parts Nemesis (Type-3) (追跡者最終形態)
Catalogue: N/A
Released: 2000/1
Retail: Not For Sale/8,000円*

Information:
The big beast himself — the major reason these figures are so well known and coveted in the community. The Final Pursuer himself, as Nemesis' final form is known in Japanese, was originally only obtainable by collecting all 16 releases of the above figures to piece together. You might've noticed on the figures I have listed what parts come with what figure, but as a recap as to what comes where for this behemoth:
No.01 Jill Valentine (BIOHAZARD 3 Ver.) & DRAIN DEIMOS: Head
No.02 Jill Valentine (S.T.A.R.S. Ver.) & HUNTERβ: Lower Torso
No.03 Jill Valentine (Regina Ver.) & BRAIN SUCKER: Tail Tentacle
No.04 Carlos Olivera & NEMESIS (Type-1): Front Main Tentacle
No.05 Claire Redfield (Leather Jacket Ver.): Rear Main Tentacle
No.06 NEMESIS (Type-2): Rib
No.07 Chris Redfield (CODE:Veronica Ver.): Back Right Leg
No.08 Tyrant (BIOHAZARD 2 Ver.): Rib
No.09 Claire Redfield (BIOHAZARD 2 Ver.): Back Left Leg
No.10 SUPER TYRANT: Rib
No.11 HUNK: Rib & Front Mini Tentacle
No.12 IVY: Rib
No.13 Leon S. Kennedy (Leather Jacket Ver.): Upper Torso
No.14 LICKER: Rib
No.15 Rebecca Chambers (BIOHAZARD 0 Ver.): Front Left Leg
No.16 TYRANT (BIOHAZARD Ver.): Rib
It is a feat to get all parts together to build this, and another to realise that there were perhaps going to be Mystery Colour Versions of all figures in the line-up given we have MCV parts (head, lower torso, 2x tentacles) to create a very special alternate Type-3 figure, likely with ribs/tentacles in silver and body pieces in bronze, but they unfortunately never continued those releases. You might also notice that I've got a retail price flagged for this, and it is because for a time you could straight up buy a pre-assembled Type-3 directly from Moby Dick! It was sold in 2004 in conjunction with a solo blister release of Nemesis Type-1 (sans a Type-3 part) as part of a promotion for the release of Biohazard II Apocalypse being in cinemas. They were trying hard to get rid of them by 2005 because you could get an outlet version with a slightly banged up box for as low as 5,600円 — if you see anyone trying to sell a boxed one of these online claiming it was a lottery prize for a few grand know they're defintely not as rare as they're being made out to be; likewise for loose Type-3 parts that are missing their paperwork being sold at a premium as the boxed Type-3 sets could be completely disassembled since it was all the same parts as what came in the other figures.

Nemesis Type-3 comes in at 60cm. It has a moveable head, shoulders, tentacles, and hips.

Nemesis was sculpted by AKIHITO.
